The next day before Science started Destiny asked her teacher about the rolling ball and he told her it was Newton’s First Law of Motion. Destiny had no idea what that meant so he told her “An object in motion will stay in motion and an object will stay at rest unless acted on by an outside force” and then told Destiny he was giving her an assignment. She was to learn the next two laws of motion on her own and give examples. Destiny did not like that idea but it was extra credit and she definitely needed it so she got out her science book and looked up the next two laws of motion and decided that she could use the ball as an example for each of those too.
That day after school Destiny and Ashley were playing outside again and Destiny brought a beach ball and her basketball. Ashley was very confused but Destiny said, “I am getting some extra credit and learning the laws of motion.” For her first experiment she took both the balls placed them on the ground in front of and hit them, the basketball hit a little lighter than the beach ball, to see how far and fast they each went. The beach ball went faster and farther than the basketball. Destiny recorded her results and wrote down that is was the result of Newton’s Second Law of Motion which states “Force=Mass + Acceleration”. More force and less mass equals more acceleration which is why the beach ball went faster and less force and more mass equals less acceleration which is why the basketball did not go as fast or as far.
The next experiment was Destiny’s favorite because it involved playing basketball and that was her favorite sport in the world. It was a very simple experiment. She just bounced her ball and it came back up to her. She recorded that is was due to Newton’s Third Law of motion that states that “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.” The basketball was thrown on the ground and it bounced back up. She completed her experiments and spent the rest of the afternoon playing basketball with Ashley.
The very next day she gave her research and experiment results to her science and he was very impressed with her work. She improved her grade a lot and she was very happy. It just goes to show you can learn and have fun at the same time!
